With a mission to bridge the gap between students and essential resources, the CIS program has become a beacon of hope and support for both students and the community at large.

The CIS program in Barbour County set out with two primary objectives: to enhance attendance and behavior among students. Spearheading this initiative are three dedicated site coordinators, each stationed at one of the participating schools:

  • Philip Barbour High School: Paula Daniels
  • Kasson Elementary/Middle School: Sabrina Holbert
  • Philippi Middle School: Mindy Hicks

Paula Daniels, stationed at Philip Barbour High School, embodies the spirit of CIS through her unwavering commitment to building relationships with students. Her role extends far beyond that of a typical educator; she serves as a trusted ally for students and their families, offering support and assistance in various capacities.

Paula's innovative initiatives, such as the establishment of a free school store and snack area, have garnered significant praise and engagement from the student body. By providing essential items and snacks free of charge, regardless of economic status, Paula has created a nurturing environment where students feel supported and cared for.

Moreover, Paula's efforts extend beyond the confines of the school campus, with outdoor activities like nature walks and vision board creations fostering a sense of positivity and empowerment among students. Her success stories, including securing a bed for a student in need and facilitating a student's first-ever after-school event attendance, underscore the profound impact of her work.

At Kasson Elementary/Middle School, Sabrina Holbert champions the CIS program with a focus on social-emotional support and community engagement. Through initiatives like the Second Step program and partnerships with local churches, Sabrina has created a supportive environment where students feel valued and understood.

Sabrina's dedication to addressing the basic needs of students, from providing food and clothing to offering emotional support, has not gone unnoticed. Her efforts have not only enriched the school community but have also raised awareness among community members about the challenges faced by students.

Quarterly rewards are organized as an incentive trip. She helps with incentives and encourages students to bring up their grades, so they are able to attend. She is so positive and encouraging. She is a huge help to the school and a blessing to have!"

The CIS program in Barbour County extends beyond the school walls, actively engaging with the local community to provide holistic support to students. Events like Future Ready Night at PBHS serve as platforms for students and families to explore post-secondary options and access essential resources, including financial aid advice and free services.

Looking ahead, the CIS program aims to deepen its community engagement efforts by partnering with local institutions, such as libraries, and expanding its outreach initiatives to empower students and families further.
